Vessel Bills of Sale
The transfer instrument that should accurately identify the seller, buyer, vessel and consideration.
A bill of sale records a transfer of the seller’s interest. It does not itself guarantee clean title, release a recorded mortgage, or complete every registry filing.
Get the identity details right
Use the legal names and capacities of the parties, vessel name, official number if documented, HIN, and a useful description of included equipment. Confirm that the person signing has authority for the titled owner.
The consideration and effective date should match the closing statement and agreement. Notarization, witness, original-signature and registry requirements differ by flag and filing type.
Coordinate the instrument with closing
Hold executed transfer documents under the closing protocol until funding and agreed conditions are met. Pair the bill of sale with releases, delivery documents and registry applications as appropriate.
Keep executed originals and a delivery record. A buyer should review whether the intended registry accepts electronic copies or requires a prescribed form.
Buyer checklist
- Confirm exact legal entities and signatory authority.
- Reconcile HIN, official number and vessel description.
- Describe included equipment or attach a schedule.
- Coordinate execution with lien releases and funding.
- Preserve originals and file with the applicable registry.
