Vessel Abstracts of Title
How to read the federal record of ownership and recorded instruments for a documented vessel.
For a U.S. documented vessel, an abstract of title is a record from the Coast Guard’s documentation system. It is a valuable starting point, not a legal title opinion or a complete lien search.
Read the record in context
Review the chain of title, current owner, mortgages, satisfactions and other recorded instruments. Compare the official number and vessel identity with the proposed sale documents; similar names are not reliable identifiers.
Dates matter. A stale abstract may not show a recently filed instrument, and a satisfaction should be examined for the secured party, debt and vessel it actually releases.
Know the limits
Not every maritime claim is recorded in the federal documentation record. Possessory claims, state tax issues, litigation, crew claims and some maritime liens may require additional inquiry.
Ask a maritime professional to interpret material exceptions and determine whether releases, payoff letters, UCC searches or other protections are appropriate.
Buyer checklist
- Order an abstract using the vessel official number.
- Compare owner and chain of title to seller disclosures.
- List every open mortgage or recorded notice.
- Confirm satisfactions and releases are vessel-specific.
- Supplement with broader lien, litigation and tax diligence.
